Algarve culture & Local markets

Destinations, Holiday, Leisure, Luxury, Travel

Local markets are a really big part of the Portuguese culture. You can’t visit the Algarve without spending a morning shopping for the local delicacies at these amazing markets.

Full of amazing sights and smells, they have a wide array of fresh fruits and vegetables, homemade jams and honeys, fresh fish as well as local handicraft – perfect for a souvenir to remember your holiday in Portugal!

The villa is well situated for a visit to Loulé’s market – it’s just a 5 minute drive away!

The market is open Monday to Saturday from 7am to 3pm. It’s held in the beautiful Arabian style market hall on Praça da República but there are also outdoor stalls available.

We recommend you arrive early so you have the pick of the freshest food. And in the summer it gets really hot, so going early is much more comfortable!

Here’s a few photos to give you a taste of what to expect:

Even in the springtime you can enjoy Loulé’s market. These photos were taken just last week – look at the fantastic spread of vegetables as well as homemade produce. And don’t get us started on how amazing all the fish looks – although the smell is not so enticing!

So why not book your holiday to the wonderful Algarve and make sure you include the local markets on your checklist of must-do’s!

Sending you sunshine! Casa Apollono Team 🙂

Experience the Algarve’s Culinary Delights! Volume 2

Destinations, Holiday, Leisure, Luxury, Travel

On Tuesday we brought you the delicious, fresh seafood of the Algarve.

Now it’s time for the meat lovers!

From Brazilian style meats, to the legendary piri-piri chicken! There’s so much for you to try…

Scroll down to read our recommendations just for you!

Meat

Portuguese meat dishes are strongly influenced by their Brazilian counterparts. The two cultures are closely entwined; the Portuguese arrived in Brazil in 1500 and brought their tastes and styles of cooking with them. In turn, the Portuguese learned how to BBQ delicious meats from the Brazilians.

Enough of the history lesson, let’s see the meat!

Here’s one of our favourite steak dishes ~ pichana served at Bem Bom. The food here is incredible – not only is the meat sublime but the accompaniments are just as tasty! You’ve got to try the black bean stew with rice and maize, or for the more adventurous – deep-fried banana and BBQ pineapple. Both surprisingly delicious with the pichana meat!

  • Bem Bom, Quarteira – a family run rodizio and picanha restaurant. Amazing food – think all you can eat mouth-watering steaks – with a friendy locals atmosphere. The dining experience is completely unique too – this is a must visit for your holiday.

 Piri-Piri Chicken

piri

Who can come to the Algarve and not try the famous piri-piri chicken in its homeland? It’d be hard to find somewhere that doesn’t BBQ this dish well but our favourites are:

  • Churrasqueira Leonel e filhos, Loule – situated 5 minutes from the villa, you can’t beat the fast delivery of their succulent chicken! Frango piri piri and batatas fritas – just what you need when you’re starving!

  • Marufo 1, Quarteira – known as the chicken shack, this restaurant offers brilliant food in a rustic setting!

Top Tip! It’s always full at Marufo 1 so get there early – we like it for lunch after a morning spent Go-Karting at the nearby track (more on that next week!)

We hope you enjoyed this post – are you craving some of the Algarve’s finest meat dishes like we are now?

The Algarve is known for its diverse seafood – there’s something for everyone! Some of our favourites are the famous sardhinhas (sardines), amêijoas à bulhão pato (clams), lagosta (lobster) and robalo (sea bass).????????????????????????????????????????

Here are a few of the best places to enjoy these traditional dishes:

  • Temperus, Praia do Trafal – daily fresh fish set right on the beach, perfect lunch!
  • Restaurante Marisqueira O Jacinto, Quarteira – magnificent seafood is a favourite amongst the locals. The atmosphere & service is great and we love the clams here!
  • O Alagoas, Santa Barbara de Nexe – close to the villa this evening spot does superb shell fish.

Top Tip! Buy yourself some fresh fish from the local market in Loulé – just 5 minutes from the villa by car. Cook it up on the BBQ and enjoy a good night with friends, with the backdrop of a beautiful Algarvian sunset.

Whilst we’re stuck in our daydream – you don’t have to be! Have a look at the owner’s direct website (we’ll post a link at the bottom of the page) for the Villa’s availability and start planning your trip now – whether it’s a weekend mini-break or a summer vacation!

In the mean time, here are a few of our favourite weekend activities to do at the Villa to get you in the mood for your holiday!

  1. Pop down the road to the local Campina bakery and pick up some delicious Algarvian pastries for breakfast. A real favourite are the heavenly pastel de nata (Portuguese custard tarts.)
